About Broadwell Christian Hospital

History
Started in Fatehpur, India in Colonial days-1907-1909 by missionaries from Canada, Broadwell Christian Hospital has come a long way. Dr Mary and Jemima Mackenzie were the first missionaries who came to Fatehpur, in response to God’s call in their lives. They initially started treating the poor and needy people from a small dispensary, and road side clinics. In 1973 the hospital came under EHA (Emmanuel Hospital Association). The hospital is a hundred years old today and fighting the battle for survival amidst varied challenges faced by a non-profit by offering services to the poor while maintaining the non-profit code of ethics.

What equipment we need- To continue the good work

The income that we generate from the hospital is just enough to pay up the salaries of all the staff. The following are the urgent needs of this hospital for which we are praying for support.

  1. Centralised Oxygen supply: Oxygen is being very regularly used for many of our patients especially the children. Since it is directly supplied from the cylinders there is no mechanism presently to detect when the oxygen in the cylinder is over or not. In addition, when in dire emergency it is seen that we are aimlessly running around to find the right cylinder that works and thereby losing precious time. This can be sorted out only by making the oxygen supply centralized. Without this, we cannot go forward for developing a Neonatal ICU or an adult semi ICU which are important agendas for later part of the year.

    Budget: Rs. 1,20,000

  1. Hospital Canteen: Hospital has not had a canteen of its own for all these years. There are no proper places outside the hospital where patients and relatives can get their food. Since many of our patients come from very far away villages, the only food that is available at several times are biscuits. Many patients have requested for one. We are planning to start a canteen employing a self help group guided by our Community Health Department. We have already paid them an advance of Rs. 10,000 to start this project. This will be a source of income for this self help group containing about 8 ladies and one man from the villages. It will be a source of relief for the patients and relatives admitted in our hospital as many of them have to rely only on biscuits that are the only things available outside the hospital. It will be a source of snacks for staff during a tea break in between their usual busy schedule. Money is required for setting up the canteen.

    Budget: Rs. 60,000

  1. Xray room renovation: The Xray room of the hospital does not have adequate protection for the Xray technician and needs to fulfill the standard requirements. Rennovation is planned in two stages: initial stage concentrating on the safety of XRay technician and the second stage for completing the remaining standard requirements.

Budget:  Rs. 125,000 (Rs. 30,000 for 1st phase and remaining for 2nd phase)

  1. Chapel renovation: The original structure of Broadwell Christian Hospital has a chapel as the center structure which separates the residential part and hospital side of the building. This chapel underwent partial renovation but the work could not be completed due to inadequate funds. We hope that this chapel due to its proximity to the ward and rest of hospital will be the center point for patients to move in a holistic manner of treatment. Support is needed to complete the work on the chapel.

    Budget: Rs. 70,000

  1. Pharmacy renovation: After several years of striving to get a pharmacy license without a bribe, we have finally got it miraculously by divine intervention. Upgradation of pharmacy was always pushed to the back due to lack of license. Now that we have the license in our hands we would like to upgrade it. We need to have a proper stores section which needs a separate room. Several racks need to be brought into the pharmacy

Budget: Rs. 20,000 (pharmacy upgradation) + Rs. 30,000 (construction of stores)

  1. Labour room expansion: Our present labour room has space for just 2 delivery tables. June to September happens to be the busiest months for the labour room. We have been seeing a rapidly increasing number of deliveries in the past one year. Quite often, deliveries had to be conducted in the waiting room due to lack of available space in the labour room. If this trend continues, we expect that we will be in severe shortage of space and deliveries may have to happen in the waiting room or even on the floor. Therefore, expanding the labour room to double the present size accommodating 4 delivery tables is a priority before the busy season starts.

    Budget: Rs. 3,00,000

  1. Autoclave machine: For years, our hospital has managed with a very old and small autoclave machine. This machine was brought as second hand from another unit hospital. Presently, this machine is insufficient to handle the increased load of surgeries happening here and more importantly, it has become unsafe for use due to its propensity to give electric shock to the technician. A new and bigger autoclave is very essential as the present quality of our sterilization is questionable.

Budget: Rs. 300,000 (for 100L capacity autoclave)

  1. Renovation of old quarters: Many of the present older staff quarters have been leaking very badly during the rains. Many of these staff adjust by keeping buckets all over their quarters collecting the water. They urgently need repair before the next rains. 5 quarters need such repair and renovation.

    Budget:  Rs. 50,000

  1. Neonatal ICU: Due to the large number of deliveries that occur here, neonatal care has become a necessity. We have a good number of babies who become sick and because of this we have no other choice but to refer them to Kanpur due to lack of adequate facilities in our district. Many of these children do not survive the 2 to 3 hour trip to Kanpur. Therefore, it becomes a necessity for us to develop our own Neonatal ICU. The infrastructure for the ICU has already been built and therefore the major investment is on the equipments. We would require phototherapy units (at least 2 in no), infant ventilators (2 in no), infusion pumps, oxygen hoods.

    Budget:

    Ventilators – 2 nos – 225,000 x 2 = 450,000

     Infusion pumps – 2 nos – 38,000 x 2 = 76,000

     Double surface phototherapy units – 2 nos – 125,000 x 2 = 250,000

     Miscellaneous – 50,000

     TOTAL = 826,000

  1. Electrical and plumbing maintenance work: Most of the electrical and plumbing lines of the hospital are very old and needs a proper maintenance work before the rains. Most of the water pipes have become rusted and are getting blocked. They need a total renovation.

Budget: Rs. 15,000 (for electrical) + Rs. 15,000 (for plumbing)

  1. Administrative block: Some of the rooms in the OPD block are taken up by the administrative sector. To open up more rooms for doctor’s consultation, the administrative sector needs to be shifted elsewhere. At present, there are only 3 doctor’s consultation rooms. We have identified an area above our male ward and private wards which can be a potential administrative block with conference room. We also plan to shift the Community Department into the same area thereby opening up the space of present Community Health Dept for construction of Dharamshala for patient relatives to stay at night.

    Budget: Rs. 7,00,000

  1. Residential quarters: There is an urgent need for more doctors. There are few doctors who have expressed their willingness to come but there are no quarters presently available for them.

    Budget: Rs. 3,100,000

  1. Dharamshala: The present Community Dept office once shifted to the new Administrative Block can be renovated to a Dharamshala for patient relatives to stay. Most of the relatives of patients in the general ward usually stay on the courtyard or corridor. This makes it extremely difficult especially during the rainy and summer season.

    Budget: Rs. 30,000

  1. Generator: The power scenario in entire UP is pathetic. Due to regular power cuts, generator is very essential. Our present generator is 35 KV. This generator gets overloaded very often because of which the generator gets damaged. An 80 KV generator is very essential.

    Budget: Rs. 8,00,000

  1. Renovation, Painting and repair of OPD, in patient wards- Plenty of repair work needs to be put into various parts of the hospital.

    Budget: Rs. 70,000

  1. Boundary wall and main gate: Boundary wall is presently at the same height as when built 100 years back. Since the outside road level has risen over the many years, the boundary wall is too short. This wall needs to be raised for safety reasons.

    Budget:  Rs. 30,000

    OTHER PLANS IN 2010

  1. Ophthalmology OPD and upgrading of facilities – a new eye block
  2. Dental OPD – dental chairs, instruments, equipments
  3. Laparoscopic equipments
  4. Endoscopy
  5. ANM Nursing school with accommodation facilities
  6. Orphanage in the hospital campus
  7. Renovation of right side of hospital for expansion purposes
  8. Blood bank
